At South Atlantic Holdings, we love in transforming properties into stunning living spaces that balance style, functionality, and charm. In this project, we breathed new life into a dining room area that had a traditional farmhouse aesthetic. The dining room, once a cozy haven of rustic appeal, needed a modern update to align with the sleek, contemporary vision we had for the property’s interior design. Instead of starting from scratch, we took a creative and sustainable approach: we retained the existing farmhouse-style dining table and replaced the chairs and benches with COLAMY Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Dining Chairs, creating a striking blend of old and new.
Retaining the Heart of the Room: The Farmhouse Table
At the heart of this dining space was a timeless farmhouse table, similar to the Signature Design by Ashley Bolanburg Dining Table. This two-tone piece featured a weathered oak tabletop paired with an antique white trestle base, exuding a warm and inviting character. Its distressed finish gave it a lived-in charm that perfectly reflected the cozy farmhouse aesthetic.
While the table had become a centerpiece for gatherings and celebrations over the years, its accompanying seating was a different story. The chairs and benches were heavy, and outdated—elements that no longer fit the modern, minimalist style we envisioned for the revamped interior. However, we saw the potential to make the table the star of the room once again by pairing it with chairs that would accentuate its presence without compromising its rustic charm.
The Solution: The Perfect Marriage of Old and New
After carefully considering design options, we introduced the COLAMY Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Dining Chairs to the space. These chairs proved to be the perfect solution for updating the room’s aesthetic while maintaining its warmth. Their clean, mid-century design features rattan curved backs, tuft velvet upholstery, and metal legs—elements that exude sophistication without overwhelming the table’s natural beauty.
We chose the chairs in a warm mustard-yellow tone, a bold and inviting color that added a cheerful pop to the room. The choice was inspired by the golden hues of the natural sunlight streaming through the windows, which we wanted to echo in the furniture to create a space that felt vibrant yet cozy. Their clean, mid-century design features curved backs, velvet upholstery, and metal legs —elements that exude sophistication without overwhelming the table’s natural beauty.
This creative combination not only enhanced the table’s rustic charm but also infused the dining room with a lively personality, making it an irresistible focal point of the dining area.
Why Updating Chairs is a Smart Choice
For property owners looking to refresh their rental spaces without overhauling the entire design, swapping out chairs is an excellent option. Here’s why this method worked so well for this project:
-
Cost-Effective Solution
Replacing just the chairs was far more economical than investing in a brand-new dining set. This approach allowed us to allocate resources toward other design upgrades in the property. -
Sustainability
By retaining the farmhouse table, we minimized waste and avoided discarding a perfectly functional piece of furniture. This sustainable choice aligns with modern design trends that emphasize eco-conscious decisions. -
Enhanced Versatility
The COLAMY chairs provided a modern upgrade that doesn’t just match the table—they also complement the overall interior design throughout the unit. This makes the dining room feel cohesive with the other spaces. -
Quick Transformation
Unlike large-scale renovations, this simple furniture swap delivered a dramatic visual impact without the hassle of complex installations or extended timelines.
Styling Tips for a Cohesive Look
To complete the room’s transformation, we styled the space with a few finishing touches:
-
Lighting: A thin, flat, modern, flush-mount light fixture pendant with clean lines and a white finish was added above the table to enhance the contemporary aesthetic.
-
Tabletop Decor: To bring life to the table without overwhelming the design, we chose a Faux Eucalyptus and Willow Flower Arrangement. The arrangement was displayed alongside a couple of miniature faux fruit-themed decorations like a novelty porcelain pineapple candy jar filled with individually-wrapped pineapple candies (the pineapple is a recognized symbol for hospitality). These items were placed inside of a hand-woven Rattan Round Serving Tray and displayed as the minimalist centerpiece. This arrangement, featuring lifelike eucalyptus leaves and soft willow branches in natural green tones, and the yellow pineapple perfectly complemented the warm yellow chairs and rustic table. The flower arrangement's realistic texture and subtle pop of greenery added freshness to the space, while the neutral yet refined design tied the room together, creating a calming and inviting atmosphere.
-
Textiles: A hand-woven jute and cotton table runner adds the finishing touch to the tabletop and a neutral-toned fiber area rug anchored the dining space while complementing the chairs and table.
